Safety Sign Size and Viewing Distance Guide

Signs should be large enough to view with ease when communicating safety messages to employees and/or visitors. The size of the sign is dependent on the size the writing must be to be legible from a distance.

The size of a sign will depend on the location distance and other factors such as lighting and environment.

The following sizing recommendations combine to ensure that a safety sign is adequately legible by all viewers:

  • Any Pictograms or images present on the sign must be at least 15mm per metre of viewing distance.

  • Any Upper Case (Capital) text must be a minimum of 5mm high per metre of viewing distance required. (Example Text: NO SMOKING IN THIS AREA)

  • All Lower Case text must be a minimum of 4mm high per metre of view distance required. Please note, it is not recommended to incorporate lower case text on a safety sign as it can be difficult to read.

DISCLAIMER: These recommendations are based on signage found in well-lit areas, with pedestrian workers as viewers. The information provided is a guide only. Bronson Safety recognises that all situations are different and thus certain recommendations may not be applicable to all.
