The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals is an internationally agreed-upon system, created by the United Nations at the beginning of 1992. Australia began transitioning to the GHS in 2012 and as of 1st January 2017 was fully implemented. The purpose of the new GHS is to reduce time, associated costs, remove barriers to trade, and protect people and the environment from chemical hazards using the GHS international system of 9 standard symbols.
