Spill Pallets & Decks
Safely store, collect and dispense oils and chemicals in and around the workplace.
Australian Laws and Regulations indicate that spill containment is required where oils and hazardous chemicals are stored in a workplace. Spill Pallets and Decks are required to prevent and prepare for oils spills, and to reduce injury and risk.
The bund is designed to contain spillages and leaks from liquids used, stored or processed above ground, and to facilitate clean-up operations. The type of bunding required in a specific workplace will be determined by:
- The level of risk at the site.
- The type of facility.
Workplaces that most often require spill containment includes, but is not limited to:
- Workshops and automotive
- Transport and shipping
- Mining, oil and gas
- Hospitals and defence
- Councils and utilities
Where liquids are stored above ground, bunding and spill containment is necessary.
- Australian Standards relevant to spill containment include AS 1940–2004, AS 4326–2008, AS 2714–2008, AS 3780–2008, AS 2507–1998, and AS/NZS 4452–1997.
- Other legislation and policies are also relevant.
- Temporary spill containment pallets may be required where permanent bunding options are not appropriate or applicable.
- Australian Standards specify that temporary Spill Pallets and Bunds must have a minimum spill capacity of at least 110% of the largest drum.
- Temporary spill pallets should contain drums and be located in a level area.
- Pallets should be covered if stored in an outdoor environment.
- All bunds should be routinely inspected to ensure maintenance and integrity.
- All operators working with bunds should know how to carry out preventive maintenance and use standard operating procedures to stop escaping substances from entering the environment.
